polyglot theatre : news update

After our travels around the world, Polyglot is coming home this month.  After tours to Shanghai, Seoul and Hong Kong, our hit of the Melbourne International Comedy Festival, Check Out! returns for a season at Monash University during the September school holidays. Our community development project with parents and children in Healesville, Our Place, has been progressing beautiful and an interactive installation created by the children will be open on Saturday 18 September.

Congratulations to our Ambassadors’ Circle patron, Miss Betty Amsden OAM for winning the 2010 Melbourne Award for Contribution to the Community, and also to our Development Manager, Debby Maziarz for being nominated as a state finalist for the 2010 Telstra Business Woman of the Year Awards.

In a few weeks, Polyglot is heading back to Shanghai with a new roving act.  We're looking to you to name the three new characters (an emu, a koala and a pelican), before they head to the Shanghai World Expo from 27 September! Details below.

Separated At Birth - Name our Puppets Competition

Polyglot welcomes three new puppets to the Wild Things family. But we need you to name them.  We’re running a ’separated at birth’ naming competition. Please send us a photo of your friend or relative with an uncanny likeness to our emu, koala or pelican puppets (email to info@polyglottheatre.com).  We will name the puppet after our favourite entries. The best Separated at Birth entries will win a $50 book voucher.  One entry per puppet per child (under 12 years) and closing date is Friday 10 Sept.

City of Riddles - Update

Polyglot visited the children at Whittington Primary School for the Arts2Go program launch and were very happy to meet Arts Minister Peter Bachelor who launched the Arts2Go program in front of the audience of children from Prep to Grade 6. We had great fun trying out one of the interactive effects in City of Riddles as part of the event, with a secret mobile phone delivering instructions to one child, to the delight of his friends. In the next few weeks, we will be trying out lots more of the interactivity with children from our development group and our local area of Stonnington, testing the ways in which they will be drawn into the action of the show.  Schools wanting the show for our November in-schools tour should book now!

Our Place - Healesville Workshops

The director of our community process installation work Our Place, in Healesville, writes: "I’m loving this project! It’s so nice to see parents interacting and genuinely sharing expression, feelings and ideas with their kids - and visa versa. Encouraged to think surreal and bizarre as well as naturalistic, participants came up with interesting responses to the challenges we set them - from skydiving on a bicycle with a friend, to living in a bird’s nest with chocolate raining down around them. Sound designers, Maddie (Flynn) and Tim (Humphreys) also led a great session about making sounds with voice to create environments - conducting us as a choir of river and bird sounds."

With three more weeks to go, the artists and participants are getting ready to present their creations in a public walk-through installation exhibition at Healesville Memorial Hall on Saturday 18 September.

Ambassadors’ Circle

Polyglot’s Ambassadors’ Circle is an annual giving program supporting Polyglot’s artistic works, currently with 20 members, headed by its Patron Miss Betty Amsden OAM. Polyglot congratulates Betty who recently won the 2010 Melbourne Award.

Polyglot develops works in collaboration with children from marginalised communities – such as the children of Dinjerra Primary School in Braybrook who we are working with to develop City of Riddles. We offer these programs to the disadvantaged schools for free to achieve maximum accessibility, and we are seeking your help to fund this program.
