polyglot theatre : news update

This month, Artistic Director Sue Giles celebrates ten years leading Polyglot. In this time, Sue has written or directed ten full length works for the company, broadened Polyglot’s scope to facilitate a number of community residencies, expanded our touring arm so we now reach over 60 000 children annually on four continents and boldly redefined Polyglot’s vision to be Australia’s leading interactive theatre company for children. You can watch this video where Sue talks about Polyglot’s new artistic direction.

Sue is celebrating her decade of achievements in Hong Kong where her award-winning production of Check Out! is playing a sold out season at the Hong Kong International Arts Carnival all week. Audiences at home will be able to enjoy Polyglot’s homecoming performance of Check Out! at Monash University during the September school holidays.

Polyglot’s creative developments continue, with the City of Riddles set being constructed as we speak, ahead of its November premiere, and the creative team working away to put the finishing touches on the script development. Schools wanting this 360 degree theatrical experience as an incursion should book now. A Victorian theatres tour will be happening throughout 2011.

We’ve also been developing work for our smallest citizens, with our Theatre is Child’s Play workshops for childen aged 0 to 3 a sold-out hit at the Arts Centre.

Theatre is Child’s Play

On 9 & 10 July, Polyglot artists immersed themselves in a two day season of workshops at The Arts Centre for the very very young - creating a creative and hands-on space for children from 0 - 3 years old and their adults. The fully-booked workshops explored a range of sensory theatrical experiences with participants. Read more in Artistic Director Sue Giles´ report.

Roving in China

Next month, Polyglot will premiere a new roving act at the beautiful Australian pavillion at the World Expo in Shanghai. We are excited to feature two new characters - a koala and a pelican, being created by master puppet makers Graeme Davis and Tim Wells. This tour is supported by the Australia-China Council.

To celebrate the arrival of our new puppets, we will be running a naming competition for kids. So ask your imaginative young people (up to 12 years) to start dreaming up names. More details the next enews.

Our Place - Healesville Workshops

Polyglot has partnered again with the Shire of Yarra Ranges, presenting a series of free weekly child-parent workshops for local residents, ending in an inspiring installation outcome in Healesville. Polylgot’s artists working on the project are Jessica Wilson (Director), Madelaine Flynn and Tim Humphrey (Sound Designers) and Lisa Frankland (Designer).

Ambassadors’ Circle

Polyglot’s Ambassadors’ Circle is an annual giving program supporting Polyglot’s artistic works, currently with 20 members, headed by its Patron Miss Betty Amsden OAM. Last month, we welcomed two new members - Damien Hodgkinson and Kirsty Ellem.

We aim to develop works in collaboration with children from marginalised communities – such as the children of Dinjerra Primary School in Braybrook who we are working with to develop City of Riddles. We offer these programs to the disadvantaged schools for free to achieve maximum accessibility, and we are seeking your help to fund this program.
